KENYA PARHAM

“WET CEMENT”

How to make a “Poetic Politico”: Take the child of a Distinguished African-American Psychologist, Scholar, & Academician and an accomplished University Educator/Administrator and mix in a young-adult mind shaped by the struggle to maintain a sense of African consciousness amidst a racially saturated, Euro-centric environment. Couple that with an individual who’s identity is defined by a collection of pieces of knowledge and gems of blessed relationships she has cultivated along her journey and you’ve got Kenya: a young woman who, by each stroke of her poetically infused pen, speaks volumes with her writing. She developed a love for linguistics at the age of 9 when she took up journaling to escape her childhood qualms and began expanding her budding vocabulary by writing down every colorful word she encountered. As a Political Science & Pan African Studies double-major @ California State University Northridge, Kenya has channeled her fervor for her studies to find her voice within the world of Art. This self-named “Poetic Politico” began performing her work 2 years ago, at LA’s First Fridays and, in essence, admits to have “drunken the kool-aid”; She has found where she belongs. Kenya has plans of attending an Ivy League University for a graduate degree in Black Political Thought & Philosophy. In the mean time, she’s still filling in the blanks of her fairytale.
